Taliban Authorities and Pakistani Forces Claim Multiple Deaths in Recent Border Clashes

Border Tensions Intensify
Pakistani Armed Forces and Afghan Authorities Blame Each Other of Initiating Attacks in Afghanistan's Frontier Region of Spin Boldak

New fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the opposing side of initiating deadly clashes.

Pakistan's military stated that its troops had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Taliban fighters" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak district border district.

A Afghan authorities representative said that 12 Afghan civilians had been killed and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. Not one of the reported deaths could be verified by third parties.

Violence between the neighbors has escalated since blasts rocked Afghanistan last week, which Kabul attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny claims that it is harboring armed groups aiming at Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Armed Engagements

The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the border, but also on social media, trying to convince the public that their faction is inflicting more damage.

The most recent fighting follow severe cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces asserted to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan reported it neutralized two hundred "militants and affiliated insurgents". The claimed death tolls announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.

A few days of unstable peace that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday.

On-the-Ground Reports and Consequences

Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including footage claiming to be of those killed and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of guard positions destroyed. These videos have not been verified.

A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that clashes erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another resident in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, said that "intense clashes persisted for almost several hours".

"We observed drones and fighter planes soaring over us, some of our family members are wounded," they said.

A doctor in one of the medical facilities in the region stated that he counted "7 fatalities and 36 wounded transported to the hospital", including males, females and minors.

The circumstances were "tense" and more casualties were being taken to medical care, he said.

Evacuations and International Responses

A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "hundreds of households have been displaced since last night due to the intense fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a several Taliban posts were attacked by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the remains of two armed forces members.

In a distinct night-time clash on the western frontier, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been killed.

The hostilities have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including China and Russia, as well as a suggestion from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to broker a ceasefire.

On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the clashes.

"I urge everyone involved to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he wrote.

Long-Standing Disputes

Pakistan has long accused the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an attempt to impose a rigid Islamic-led system of rule.

The Taliban leadership has consistently denied this.
