The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.

If these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
