'Those final few hours were brutal': British duo finish epic journey in Down Under after rowing across Pacific Ocean

One more day. Another day battling through the pitiless slide. A final stretch with aching hands clutching relentless paddles.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles across the ocean – a monumental half-year voyage over the Pacific Ocean that included close encounters with whales, malfunctioning navigation equipment and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

A gusting 20-knot wind near Cairns kept pushing their compact craft, their boat Velocity, from the terra firma that was now achingly close.

Loved ones gathered on land as a planned midday arrival evolved into afternoon, then 4pm, then early evening. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at Cairns Yacht Club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe said, eventually on solid ground.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we honestly thought we weren't going to make it. We ended up outside the channel and contemplated a final swim to land. To finally be here, following years of planning, just feels incredible."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The English women – aged 28 and 25 respectively – departed from Lima, Peru in early May (a first try in April was stopped by equipment malfunction).

Over 165 days at sea, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, working as a team through daytime hours, individual night shifts while her teammate dozed minimal sleep in a cramped cabin.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a water desalinator and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the duo depended upon an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for only partial electrical requirements.

Throughout the majority of their expedition through the expansive ocean, they operated without navigation tools or signaling devices, turning them into a "ghost ship", hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, crossed commercial routes and endured raging storms that, periodically, disabled all electrical systems.

Historic Accomplishment

Yet they continued paddling, one stroke after another, during intensely warm periods, under star-filled night skies.

They have set a new record as the pioneering women's team to row across the South Pacific Ocean, without breaks or external assistance.

Additionally they collected more than £86,000 (179,000 Australian dollars) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Daily Reality at Sea

The women attempted to stay connected with society beyond their small boat.

On "day 140-something", they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with still more than 1,600km to go – but granted themselves the pleasure of unwrapping a portion to honor England's rugby team victory in the World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, was unacquainted with maritime life until she rowed the Atlantic solo during 2022 establishing a record.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when they feared they wouldn't make it. As early as day six, a path over the planet's biggest sea appeared insurmountable.

"Our power was dropping, the water-maker pipes burst, yet after numerous mends, we managed a bypass and just limped along with reduced energy throughout the remaining journey. Whenever issues arose, we simply exchanged glances and went, 'typically it occurred!' Yet we continued forward."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. The remarkable aspect was our collaborative effort, we problem-solved together, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she remarked.

Rowe is from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she crossed the Atlantic by rowing, walked the southwestern English coastline, ascended Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. Further adventures likely await.

"We had such a good time together, and we're already excited to plan new adventures together as well. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
