TikTok Allegedly Leads Children's Profiles to Pornographic Content In Just a Few Taps

According to a fresh inquiry, the widely-used social media app has been discovered to guide profiles of minors to adult videos after only a few taps.

How the Study Was Conducted

A campaign organization set up simulated profiles using a date of birth for a minor and turned on the "restricted mode" setting, which is intended to reduce exposure to adult-oriented content.

Investigators discovered that TikTok proposed inappropriate and adult-themed search terms to the simulated accounts that were created on unused smartphones with no prior browsing data.

Alarming Recommendation Features

The terms suggested under the "suggested searches" feature featured "provocative attire" and "very rude babes" – and then escalated to keywords such as "hardcore pawn [sic] clips".

Regarding three of the accounts, the sexualized searches were recommended right away.

Quick Path to Pornography

After a "small number of clicks", the researchers encountered pornographic content from women flashing to penetrative sex.

The organization reported that the content tried to bypass filters, typically by showing the clip within an benign visual or video.

Regarding one profile, the procedure took two clicks after logging on: one click on the search function and then a second on the recommended term.

Compliance Requirements

The research entity, whose scope includes examining technology companies' influence on human rights, said it conducted two batches of tests.

One set occurred preceding the implementation of safeguarding regulations under the United Kingdom's digital protection law on 25 July, and another after the rules took effect.

Serious Findings

The organization stated that several pieces of content included someone who appeared to be under 16 years old and had been sent to the online safety group, which tracks online child sexual abuse material.

The campaign group claimed that TikTok was in non-compliance of the digital protection law, which obligates social media firms to prevent children from viewing dangerous material such as adult material.

Government Position

A spokesperson for the UK communications regulator, which is responsible for overseeing the law, stated: "We value the research behind this investigation and will review its results."

Ofcom's codes for complying with the law state that digital platforms that carry a significant danger of displaying dangerous material must "adjust their systems to remove dangerous material from young users' timelines.

The platform's rules forbid pornographic content.

Company Reaction

The video platform stated that upon receiving information from Global Witness, it had taken down the violating content and made changes to its recommendation system.

"Immediately after notification" of these assertions, we took immediate action to investigate them, remove content that contravened our rules, and launch improvements to our search prompt functionality," commented a official speaker.
